Cannabis-Infused Butter: How to Make it and How to Enjoy it

Cannabis-Infused Butter

If there is one thing we have learned from being experts in the industry, it is that there is literally no end to the number of creative ways you can enjoy your favorite strain of weed. The range of food products that can be enhanced and infused with cannabis goes on and on.

With that in mind, here we have set out a complete step by step guide on how to make cannabis-infused butter. This is a favorite for many including ourselves thanks for the most part to its versatility. This is an inconspicuous gem that almost everyone can enjoy in a variety of ways. It is also very simple to make following our complete instructions, so let’s get started.

Step One – Start Baking

Pun intended here, but if you want to get high with your fancy new weed-infused butter, you need to do some baking first. This process of baking your weed is also known as decarboxylation and this is what allows the cannabinoids like your all-important THC, CBD, and others to become active in your butter. It will also be helpful in making the infusion process run smoothly.

Required Items

  • Your Cannabis (around a half-ounce depending on how much butter you plan to make)
  • Oven
  • Baking Dish
  • Weed Grinder

Use your grinder to grind up the correct amount of your strain to just the right consistency as you would if you were planning on some joints. This should give the ideal consistency to your weed butter also. You can pick up a quality weed grinder from our own store or any good quality weed source. Other methods of grinding are also ok, but to achieve the consistency you are looking for, a quality grinder would be the best-suited tool.

With your weed nicely ground, it is time to line up the baking tray. Here you are aiming for an even spread of your ground strain across the tray. This should ensure that all parts are baked equally during the process.

The final part of this step is to pop your baking tray on in the center of your oven for baking. Make sure your oven is preheated to nothing more than 220F for this part of the process. The last thing you want is any overcooked strain of weed. The baking time should be around 20-30 minutes though this depends entirely on your weed. For this reason, in particular, we would recommend that you keep a close eye on your weed and the temperature of your oven throughout. This is important since the oven temperatures can tend to fluctuate.

Once you see your strain change to a deep green, brownish type of color, you will know that this step of the process has been completed successfully.

Step Two – Infusion via Stove Cooking

This is one of the more time-consuming methods, yet the most easily accessible for many. It is also a great way to ensure consistency and top quality infusion so long as you have completed the first step successfully and your product is of sufficient quality.

Required Items

  • Stove
  • Your decarbed weed from step one
  • A medium-sized saucepan
  • 8oz of butter
  •  1-2 cups of water
  • Metal strainer
With your saucepan on very low heat, add 1 cup of water, then your butter. If required, add more water. Wait for this butter to melt and once it has done so, you can add your decarboxylated cannabis from the previous step.

After mixing the ground cannabis thoroughly with the contents of your pot, you are ready to begin the waiting game. With the lid on, leave the mixture to gently simmer for a period of 3.5-4hrs. It is vital during this time and process that the temperature of your mixture stays constant and not exceed 180F. To ensure this remains within range, you should periodically check what is going on and give it a mix every 30 minutes or so. If you have a thermometer to hand to verify the temperature, this would be extra useful.

Once the cooking time has come to an end you should also be able to note this with the consistency of the butter, simply strain it with your metal strainer or a cheesecloth if you have one, into a container. Let this then cool down to room temperature. Once it has done so, it can be placed in a refrigerator or used immediately, though the likelihood is you will want to save some.

The important thing to note if you are saving some for later is that you should still try to use it up within a reasonable amount of time. This will help make sure that you experience the best quality possible from your infusion.

Try Shortbread Cookies. I have 2 recipes, one bakes at 275F, one at 300F so the THC and CBD do not get affected. They freeze well and have practically no fibre so they absorb into the bloodstream quickly. Tasty, inexpensive and easy to make. People like hiking with me…….
